Diriwayatkan dari Ahmad dan ibnu Ishaq, Ketika Amru bin Ash melihat orang-orang yang mengikuti Nabi Muhammad saw. dari hari ke hari semakin banyak, dia mengumpulkan beberapa tokoh Qurays yang sepaham dengannya dan yang mau mendengarkan omongannya. Ia mengajak orang-orang berdiskusi tentang masalah Muhammad, ia mengusulkan untuk pergi bersama-sama ke tempat raja najasyi dan tinggal disana.
Kata Amru bin Ash “Andaikan Muhammad menang atas kaum kita, kita sudah mendapatkan tempat yang aman di sisi raja najasyi. Ini jauh lebih baik bagi kita daripada dipimpin oleh Muhammad. Namun, bila kitalah yang menang nanti, itu pun tidak ada ruginya, sebab kita telah menjalin hubungan yang baik dengan rakyat raja Najasyi, kendati sudah tidak ada manfaat yang kita peroleh dari mereka.”
Beberapa tokoh qurays dan pengikutnya pun sepakat dengan usulan Amr bin Ash itu. Mereka langsung mengumpulkan kulit binatang sebanyak mungkin untuk dipersembahkan kepada raja Najasyi di habasyah sebagai hadiah. Karena hadiah yang paling disukai oleh raja Najasyi dari negeri-negeri Hijaz adalah barang-barang seperti itu.
Setelah menyiapkan hadiah, Amru bin Ash dan kaumnya dari golongan tokoh-tokoh Qurays datang kepada raja Najasyi bertepatan dengan datangnya utusan Rasulullah, yaitu Amr bin Umayyah Adh-Dhamiri. Setelah Amr bin Umayyah Adh-Dhamiri menyelesaikan keperluan dan pesan dari Rasulullah kepada raja Najasyi, tibalah giliran Amru bin Ash yang sudah menunggu untuk menghadap raja Najasyi, Amru bin Ash meminta kepada raja Najasyi untuk menyerahkan utusan Rasulullah (Amr bin Umayyah Adh-Dhamiri) kepadanya, “Sebab dia adalah musuh saya,” Katanya pada raja Najasyi.
Namun, Amru bin Ash sangat kaget karena raja Najasyi sangat marah ketika mendengar permintaanya. Kekagetan Amru bin Ash berubah menjadi rasa takut ia lansung meminta maaf. Allah telah menurunkan hidayah kepada raja Najasyi hingga terdorong untuk masuk ke dalam agama Islam setelah ia melihat antusiasme manusia, termasuk orang-orang non-Arab, untuk beriman kepada Nabi Muhammad dan membelanya.
Raja Najasyi menawarkan kepada Amru ibn Ash untuk ikut masuk Agama Islam juga bersamanya dengan cara baik-baik. Yang ditawari ternyata melakukannya tanpa ragu. Setelah itu, keluarlah Amru ibn Ash dari istana raja Najasyi dan kembali ke Mekah denga tetap menyembunyikan Keislamannya dari teman-temannya.
Beberapa hari sebelum peristiwa penaklukan Mekah (Fath Makkah), bulan safar tahun ke-8 Hiriyyah, amru ibn Ash pergi menemui Rasulullah di Madinah untuk menyatakan keislamannya. Di tengah perjalanan ia bertemu dengan Khalid ibn Walid yang ternyata punya maksud dan tujuan yang sama. Akhirnya mereka berdua pergi bersama-sama untuk menjumpai Rasulullah untuk menyatakan mengikutinya dalam agama Islam.
Diriwayatkan dari Al-Waqidi, Allah mengkehendaki Khalid ibn Walid menerima kebaikan dan meniupkan keimanan dalam hatinya. Pada saat itu, tiba-tiba saja ia teringat kebencian dan pertentangannya terhadap nabi Muhammad. Setelah merenungkannya baik-baik, ia berkesimpulan bahwa dirinya telah melakukan tindakan yang salah, dan bahwa nabi Muhammad pasti akan jaya. Berdasarkan pengalamannya di Hudaibiyah telah membuktikan bahwa nabi Muhammad selalu terlindungi. Terbukti, pada waktu itu ia dan pasukan kavelerinya hendak menghadang dan menyergap nabi Muhammad di sebuah daerah bernama Usfan, Allah menyingkap niat jahat mereka kepada Rasulullah. Rasullullah pada saat itu langsung menghentikan langkahnya dan melakukan shlalat Khauf (Shalat yang dilakukan dalam situasi kritis atau sedang perang) bersama para sahabat. Akibatnya Khalid ibn Walid bersama pasukannya tidak bisa berbuat apa-apa.
Ketika perjanjian Hudaibiyah telah disepakati, disadarinya bahwa ia dan kaummya sudah tidak memiliki cara untuk menghentikan dakwah nabi Muhammad, terlintas juga di benaknya untuk pergi ke Habasyah untuk meminta perlindungan dari raja Heraklius. Namun, belum reda kekacauan pikirannya, ternyata nabi Muhammad sudah muncul kembali di Mekah untuk melaksanakan umrah. Sesuai dengan perjanjian Hudaibiyah, saat itu ia harus menyingkir ke luar Mekah agar nabi Muhammad dan orang Islam bebas menjalankan ibadah umrah.
Ironisnya, saudara Khalid ibn Walid termasuk kedalam golongan orang islam yang melaksanakan umrah bersama Rasulullah pada saat itu, saudaranya mencarinya di Mekah namun tidak menemukannya, saudaranya menitipkan surat kepada ibu Khalid ibn Walid untuk disampaikan kepadanya, dalam surat tersebut saudara Khalid ibn Walid menyampaikan keheranannya mengapa orang seperti Khalid ibn walid tidak mampu memahami kebenara agama Islam yang dibawa oleh nabi Muhammad, dalam surat tersebut ia juga menyampaikan bahwa nabi Muhammad telah menanyakan dirinya dan mengatakan sesuatu tentang dirinya sebagai berikut, “ Tidak selayaknya orang seperti Khalid ibn Walid tidak memahami Islam, Seandainya kekuatan dan keperkasaannya itu ia manfaatkan ke dalam agama Islam untuk memerangi kaum musyrikin, niscaya hal itu lebih baik baginya. Kita akan memberinya tugas dan kedudukan yang pantas diantara orang-orang Islam yang lain…”
Tak lama berselang setelah membaca surat tersebut, muncul dalam hati Khalid ibn Walid setitik semngat baru. Keinginannya untuk masuk ke dalam Agama Islam sudah tidak terbendung lagi.
Hasratnya bertambah besar setelah ia bermimpi berada di suatu negeri yang sempit dan tandu, lalu keluar dari negeri itu menuju sebuah negeri yang hijau dan luas. “Sungguh, ini adalah pertanda yang baik,” Pikirnya.

Kini tekadnya sudah bulat untuk hijrah, Khalid ibn Walid ingin ditemani oleh orang-orangnya dan sahabatnya. Maka, ia menjumpai Shafwan ibn Umayyah dan Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahal, tapi keduanya menolak untuk ikut bersama Khalid ibn Walid. Akhirnya ia pergi sendiri ke Madinah untuk menjumpai Rasulullah. Di perjalanan ia berjumpa dengan temannya Utsman ibn Thalhah. Ia mengungkapkan maksud dan tujuannya kepada Utsman ibn Thalhah. Dari situ Utsman ibn Thalhah tahu maksud dan tujuan mereka sama yaitu menjumpai rasulullah dan menyatakan keislaman mereka, akhirnya kedua orang ini sepakat untuk melakukan persiapan sendiri-sendiridan bertemu di sebuah daerah bernama Ya’juj keseokan harinya.
Keduanya berangkat dari tempat masing-masing sebelum subuh dan bertemu di Ya’juj ketika fajar tiba. Setelah itu, mereka menempuh perjalanan bersama hingga tiba di daerah bernama Al-Huddah. Di sana mereka berdua bertemu dengan Amru ibn Ash yang satu tujuan dengan mereka, ketiga orang ini pergi bersama menuju Madinah untuk menyatakan keislaman mereka. Peristiwa ini terjadi pada bulan Shafar tahun ke-8 Hijriyyah.
Balakangan di Madinah Al-Munawwarah Khalid Ibn Walid menceritakan mimpinya kepada Abu Bakr Ash-Shiddiq. Abu Bakr berkata, “Keluarnya engkau dari negeri yang sempit dan tandus itu mengisyaratkan bahwa Allah telah memberimu hidayah untuk menerima Islam. Adapun tempat yang sempit itu adalah kemusyrikan.”
